Traveling to Lochgilphead, Argyll

When you come to visit Lochgilphead, Argyll in Scotland you will probably be coming by car or would have rented one. There are however good facilities for local travel and you will find below the Telephone numbers and, if available, links to the relevant web site.

Driving from Glasgow to Lochgilphead

If you are driving from Glasgow, take the M8 from Driving to TarbertGlasgow, drive past Glasgow Airport, at junction 30 join the M898 to cross the Erskine Bridge (now toll free). While on the bridge stay in the left lane which will take you to join the A82 towards Crianlarich. Follow the A82 up to Tarbet (Note the spelling) where you stay in the left lane to join the A83 towards Campbeltown. Follow the A83 through Arrochar, Inveraray, Minard and Lochgair to Lochgilphead. If you are going to Ardrishaig or Tarbert, continue to follow the A83. Soon after you turn left at the small roundabout you are in Ardrishaig. You will find a signboard "Ardrishaig Welcomes You" or if the local juveniles have been working at it, as often they do, the sign may read "Haste Ye Back". To go to Tarbert, follow the A83. This 14 mile stretch of the road is, to say the least, wiggly and it has 107 bends, curves and uncountable number of pot holes. (Be prepared for an occasional sheep, or a deer on the road at night) At the out skirts of the village you will come across a sign, "Tarbert Tairbeart" and you are there. You can't miss it really, its M8 -> M898 -> A82 -> A83 all the way to Tarbert!

Driving from Edinburgh to Lochgilphead

(a). The easiest way is to take the M8 to Glasgow and thereafter follow the instructions as if you were coming from Glasgow.

(b). There is another way but it's good only if you know your way around, the scenery is heavenly if it's not raining or snowing! Take the Glasgow Road, drive past Edinburgh Airport and at the Newbridge Roundabout take and follow the M9 till you drive past Sterling, take left turn at Junction 11 on B824, drive past Doune Safari Park and then take left turn on B8075, and then take a right turn on A811 until you drive past Arnprior and Buchlyvie. Now a tricky bit, soon after Buchlyvie you cross the A81. Simply turn left for a few meters and then turn right still following the A811 until you come to Balloch where you drive through two roundabouts and at the third roundabout make sure you join the A82 and drive along to Tarbet (note the spelling) where you veer left onto the A83. Now follow A83 through Arrochar, Inveraray, and onto Lochgilphead. (Follow the A83 to Ardrishaig, Tarbert and finally to Campbeltown)
